Developing the game
There is no wrong or right way to play the game but for a team to become successful it must develop it’s own strategy and tactics. Success is achieved when every player fully understands and executes the game plan in synch with his teammates.
As we start to breakdown the game we will all need to understand the different parts of the overall game plan. The following terms will help all of us develop common goals.
Individual Skills & Tactics
This includes all activities undertaken by an individual player including passing and positioning.
Team Tactics
This is the most important part of the game and rarely gets enough discussion time in UWH. This includes numerical superiority, 2on1’s, triangles, zone control, safe areas, dead zones, substitutions, attacking lanes, making space and taking space.
Team Strategies
This area is generally where we discuss formations and hope that everyone understands the team tactics based on a positional strategy. Team strategy needs to be adjustable through out a game, so you kinda need more than one.
We will play and practice a 2 – 3 – 1 formation. Try and recognize the difference between the strategy failing and the players failing to execute the strategy.
